La Crosse (continued)

The next year at La Crosse was relatively uneventful. We did play golf, we did cross-country skiing and we did go to Florida during Thanksgiving to visit my brother. Most of our cross-country skiing was done on trails up in the coulees behind the La Crosse Country Club. One Sunday afternoon I went out on those trails by myself. On one of the steep downhill parts with a curve part way down I fell, not a common event but it did happen occasionally. I thought nothing of it at the time but when I got back to the car I discovered that I had no keys, they must have fallen out of my pocket when I fell. I walked across the street to a small neighborhood bar to call Nancy to come get me in the TR7, a car we never drove in the winter. The bar had a pay phone, but then I discovered that I had no money because my wallet was locked in the car to which I had no key. I pleaded my case to the gal behind the bar and she loaned me 25 cent to use the pay phone to call Nancy. Problem solved. In the Spring we were hiking in those same hills and I pointed out to Nancy that this was the corner where I fell last winter and the spot where I probably lost my keys. I walked off the trail to the spot where I had fallen and, believe it or not, there lay my keys. Mystery solved.
